‘The Boxing Conundrum'

Is there a place for a new variant of the sport?’

This blog considers the more imperative issues and perspectives from the outsiders view on traditional boxing.

This is a controversial issue for boxing because the history of it and the evolution of the high contact sport’s rules, creates a disposition in the general community.

Highlighted arguments

Extremely demanding sport both:

  • Physically

  • Mentally

This in turn creates Perkins perspective on creating a new variant of boxing which fixes these problems.

Prohibits

  • Physical blows to the head or neck

  • Punches above a bearable level

BoxTag

Two contestants wear either a vest or shirt that provides

  • Live feedback of impacts

  • Automated scoring system.

Score the most amount of ‘hits’ on the other person, with consideration to specific parts of the vest and shoulders.

Detects change in resistance of voltage in the vests fibres.

Two main components:

  • Silver-coated nylon yarn embedded into the performance vest

  • conductive material in the front of the boxing glove.

Transceiver sends information via Bluetooth and calculates the points.

There's not a complete opposition of traditional boxing but there seems to be better user benefits that it can have

  • character building

  • development of an individual’s physical fitness.

The main issues found with traditional boxing's safety concerns have been met reasonably, so focusing on the live feedback is imperative to making the glove more usable and feel for the individual, possibly building the characteristics they need.
